A5 print of Paul, a shoveler from the Birds of Shame collection.

Watercolour and ink painting of a shoveler.

Text says:

"This is Paul. He is a shoveler. He is an ambitious entrepreneur who in fact invented the shovel and to whom we are to thank for introducing shovels into the lives of millions around the world. He is now a multimillionaire but he came from humble beginnings. Growing up on the breadline, he and his family struggled to make ends meet, as did most of his community. Paul enjoys his wealth now, and life's fineries. He has provided for his parents who also live off the success of the shovel. He moved to the other side of town, enrolled his children into expensive private schools, bought his daughter a pony, and lost touch with his old friends because they didn't have that much in common anymore and he doesn't need them. But somewhere inside, if he digs deep, Paul feels at odds with his fortune. Sometimes he has his chauffeur drive him by his old street in his Porsche with tinted windows and heated seats. He sees his old friends toiling for minimum wage whilst his wealth multiplies in investments towards his first billion, and he wonders quietly if somewhere along the line he has become something he used to hate."
